The famous Jatayu bird sculpture is an impressive 200 feet long, 150 feet wide and 70 feet tall making it the world’s largest bird sculpture! Jadayu Para took 10 years to construct from start to finish and it is built mainly from compacted concrete and some stainless steel components that has a beautiful stone finish.
This Kerala bird statue symbolises the protection of women and according to Hindu legend, Jatayu (the mythical bird) tried to save princess Sita from being kidnapped by the demon king Ravana. During the battle to save Sita, Jatayu’s left wing was chopped off by the sword of Ravana and he then fell on his back in pain with his talons clenched on top of Jadayu Rock, hence where the name originates.
To reach the top of Jadayu Rock there is a scenic cable car ride that carries up to 128 passengers at a time, split between 16 cable cars. Upon arrival to the top, visitors are free to roam around the Jatayu sculpture which offers a 360-degree observation deck that boasts incredible views of the beautiful surrounding countryside of Kerala.
The Jadayu Para sculpture itself displays individually decorated and detailed feathers that splay across the ground from where you can step up on to the sculpture and take a look around.
Inside the Jadayu Para sculpture is various rooms and exhibition spaces and there is even an observation deck inside the head of Jatayu where you can get a birds-eye-view of the outside world!
Apart from visiting the Jatayu bird statue, be sure not to miss all the fun activities that Jatayu Nature Park also has to offer!
There are up to twenty different activities and attractions to join in on at Jatayu Earth’s Centre, such as rock climbing, zip lining, high ropes course, archery, air rifle shooting, paintball, trekking, 12D cinema and much more!
