VARKALA lies on the outskirts of Thiruvananthapuram district, Kerala, India. Well known for its majestic red cliffs that are found adjacent to the Arabian Sea, Varkala is also steeped in history, and is an important Hindu pilgrimage destination.
The Getaway
Unspoiled beaches, red rocks & cliffs, and green palm trees. Sun-bathing, swimming, even some dolce far niente moment. I believe that Varkala can be your favorite getaway in Kerala.
The cliff that stands 60 feet above sea level offers you one of the most breathtaking spots ever. Do you know that the sea water along the beach of Papanasam is considered holy/sacred by the locals? It is believed that when you take a dip in the sea then all of your sins will be washed away. ‘Papanasam’ itself means redemption of sins.
The Gateway
Perched atop a majestic red cliff overlooking the Arabian Sea, The Gateway Hotel Varkala (Janardhanapuram) is an authentic charming retreat. It’s a low-rise luxury hotel with a stunning view of the coastline, surrounded by the palm trees, with a pool area, and close by the beach.
We were warmly welcomed even though it was for a short visit (on our way to Kollam during Kerala Blog Express trip). Assisted by a hotel staff named Vishnu, we were greeted with a garden party that was specially held for us by the pool. It was the best brunch I ever had in Kerala. Assortment of cakes & pastries. Refreshing mocktails & tender coconuts. Friendly staff full of smile. Good views & good fellows.
What about you, do you have your own special moment in Varkala? Or are you planning to have some getaway at The Gateway? It’s your call now.
