Travel With SilkAir From Singapore To India – A Joy To Fly

8th March 2016

I was extremely fortunate recently to travel between Singapore and India with SilkAir. I flew on their Airbus A320 into Trivandrum and then out of Kochi with both flights taking around four hours.

Offering eight destinations within India, SilkAir provides travellers the opportunity to explore a vast range of the country. SilkAir is Singapore Airlines regional carrier and takes control of the shorter routes across Asia, Australia and the Sub Continent whilst offering an affordable full service experience.

Check in for my flight to Trivandrum was smooth and if I wasn’t already excited about to heading to India for the Kerala Blog Express I was kindly upgraded to business class. Cue – lounge access! I headed straight to the Singapore Airlines lounge at Changi Airport where I got to meet up with another trip participant, Hariydi from Indonesia who runs the blogOmnduut.  As I knew we would be getting a meal on the flight I just had a couple of drinks while we waited and got some last minute charge into my devices.

On board I was immediately offered a drink and given a hot towel to freshen up before we took off. I found the staff to be incredibly professional, yet comforting and friendly throughout the flight. The cabin crew took our order for snacks and drinks and then we were in the sky. Business class passengers are served an entree, main and desert and there are options to select from. Our meals were served promptly and I loved having a table cloth placed over my tray table – definitely added to the luxe of the inflight experience.

Food

A Western and Indian option were offered. I went with the Indian meal on both flights and was very impressed with the quality and portion size.

Comfort

On each flight my seat was prepared with a pillow and blanket, I used them in both directions. My outbound flight was during the late evening so crew provided us with socks for additional comfort. The seat pitch in business class is 39-40 inches and the reclining option was enough for me to get some rest.

Entertainment

SilkAir offer a wireless inflight entertainment system meaning you can stream their programs, music and movies directly onto your own mobile device. I also had a tablet in my seat pocket with the full entertainment system pre loaded onto it.

Service

Outstanding – especially from the crew on board. Nothing was too much trouble and I was very well looked after.

What happens when things don’t go to plan?

A good judge of how well a company performs is not in what they do well, but how well they handle issues that arise. Myself and three other Kerala Blog Express participants arrived at the airport, all a little sad that our trip had come to an end. We were told that due to a delayed departure from Singapore the crew’s hours were exhausted and they were not permitted to fly back that night. Within about 30 minutes of finding out this information we were on a shuttle bus to the nearby Courtyard By Marriott, Kochi Airport. We were provided dinner, breakfast and lunch the following day. My friends onward travel plans from Singapore were also all taken care of. The ground staff had the situation under control and I feel that all efforts were made to ensure minimal passenger disruption given the circumstances.

Verdict

I was thoroughly impressed with the SilkAir service and flights. I had taken my international flight from Australia with Singapore Airlines and I could see and feel the continuity of service between the carriers.

At the time of this post SilkAir fly daily from Singapore to Kochi and four times a week from Singapore to Trivandrum. To book a flight or get up to date schedule information you can visit the SilkAir website here.

My flights from Singapore to India were sponsored by SilkAir. As always, the opinions are my own.
