There are a few places in India , where at some point the time has stopped. One of them are the Kerala backwaters. Live here and people still work exactly as they have done many, many years ago. The channels are their center of life. The locals use the water for bathing, washing clothes, washing, playing and traveling.
The Kerala Backwaters: A dying Paradise
The backwaters and I – it was love at first sight. The fantastically beautiful waterway network consists of 44 rivers, 29 lakes and lagoons and about 1500 km canals and natural waterways. Overall, the Kerala backwaters cover an area of 1,900 square kilometers. You begin in Kochi and date back to the far, in the north Kollam.
In the Kerala backwaters mainly coconut palms and rubber trees are grown. The original mangrove forests go back, unfortunately ever. In addition, the pollution of rivers and canals from year to year increases, so more and more plant and animal species to extinction. In addition, many waters by the locals (often illegal) to be drained to provide residential and agricultural land. This has the consequence that today only one third of the backwaters of Kerala is left – percentage decreasing.
Nevertheless, the backwaters are a special highlight in Kerala . Because they are simply beautiful to look at and absolutely unique in India . I love the peace that radiates the backwaters and could spend days here – on the water and in the surrounding villages. Fortunately, this is no problem, because now you can this wonderful place to explore different ways and experience.

The classic: Experience the backwaters by houseboat
Above all, there is of course the classic cruise on the houseboat. From a few hours to several days you can drive on the boat through the backwaters and watch the wonderful landscapes and the lives of the locals up close. the right is from a small nut shell up to the floating hotel here for every taste and every budget.
We had a day and a night with Lakes & Lagoons Backwater Experiences go and totally happy. Our houseboat was almost luxurious, the crew was super nice and the food fantastic. The boat ride was incredibly relaxing and counts for me is still the most beautiful Kerala memories. The sunset, the night on the water and the rest in the backwaters – an indescribably beautiful experience.

Even closer than the houseboat you come the locals by kayak. For my taste also a wonderful way to get to know Kerala Backwaters. During the tour, you have all the time and can the people and their everyday experience first hand. Almost all locals like to chat with you while washing clothes in the river or catch fresh fish for dinner. The kids rotate anyway by completely when they see you. They love to pose for you and delighted to see them, if ye provides them with a race.
But eyes on choosing the right Kayak provider! Because in the Kerala backwaters really nobody wants to fall into the water. Stay away from schrottigen Kayaks – here the risk is too great that you end up involuntarily in contaminated broth. The backwaters are divided into South Kerala backwaters that Central Kerala backwaters and the North Kerala backwaters. Most tours start in Kollam, Alappuzha and Kottayam. You can book the trip by houseboat or kayak tour in advance online or just locally. Tours to Kerala Backwaters are offered in every small village and you never have to search until you find an organizer.
